Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta

Classic Okavango Delta island living

Located on a beautiful island in the Jao Concession on the Moremi Game Reserve, Jacana Camp is a typical Delta camp. Surrounded by seasonally-inundated floodplains and papyrus swamps, Jacana Camp has five en-suite Meru-style tents, including a family tent, built on raised wooden decks to facilitate its panoramic views of the Okavango Delta. The main dining area is on an elevated platform between two magnificent sycamore fig trees and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Jacana Camp also has a cosy lounge with an area for an open fire under the stars; and a plunge pool for cooling off in the midday sun.

Highlights

  • A water wonderland, home to definitive Delta bird and animal species, from red lechwe to Pel’s fishing-owl
  • Mokoro adventures reveal crystal-channels and beautiful panoramas
  • A true water camp on a remote island deep in the Okavango Delta reveals the magic and mystique of this area

Things to do at Jacana Camp

Being a ‘water camp,’ Jacana Camp offers primarily water activities with game drives during the summer months – dependent on water levels and time of year.

Mokoro Excursions

Glide seamlessly along the waterways of Jacana in a mokoro (a traditional dug-out canoe and spot some of the small fascinating creatures of the Delta – maybe even hippo and crocodile – as well as the wealth of waterbirds of the region.

Boating

Trips in 12-seater and 7-seater boats in the waterways to the east of camp allow for good game viewing in the channels further away.

Game Drives

Land-based game drives are offered when the inundation levels are lower, typically in the summer months. These drives reveal the likes of elephant, zebra and other plains game, and potentially the predators of the region. Our open 4×4 Land Rovers, each accommodate a maximum of seven guests, thus allowing each guest a ‘window’ seat.

Fishing

Fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment (spinner rods and a small range of lures) is on offer seasonally on a catch-and-release basis.

Game Walk

Depending on qualified guide availability, nature walks with skilled, armed guides are wonderful ways of getting close to nature and observing the smaller things you miss when travelling by vehicle. (*seasonal and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide, therefore pre-booking is essential).
